Wedding shopping in India? The top suggestion every bride will get is – Chandni Chowk! But is it truly as budget-friendly a market? And what’s the experience like for a bride or groom and their families?
I answer all of this, and more, as I take you to my favourite 3 stores in Chandni Chowk for wedding shopping!
More tips:
• Go shopping in the first half, so that it’s lesser crowded. That way, the sales staff can give you complete attention.
• If you truly want to explore 4-5 different stores, keep 2 whole days in hand. It takes time for them to take out each lehenga and show it to you, and for you to try on so many of them. It’s not like t-shirt shopping where it takes you 10 minutes to try on 5 pieces!
• Most stores keep samples for you to try, so don’t expect to get anything readymade. Brides typically have to wait anywhere between 30-60 days on an average, for their wedding lehenga.
• Take eating breaks. They’re important. My go-to place is the Haldiram’s here. But people love the Paranthe Wali Gali too.
Of course, these are not the only stores in this popular market. Here’s the complete list of Chandni Chowk Shops for Bridal Shopping:
1. Om Prakash Jawahar Lal
This is where I bought my own wedding lehenga from. It’s one of the most well-known stores, and so their prices are at a slight premium. OPJL is a vastly popular spot that’s been tried and tested by – dare I assume – lakhs of brides over it’s long history of existence. The style they keep is slightly more traditional and there’s an entire floor dedicated to saris of ALL kinds. You can easily get a sparkling sari for your cocktail, or even for your mother or sister for a big wedding function here.
Despite their fame, their ambience is still the same – like all other old-school Chandni Chowk shops. This is largely a no-frills store where you go in, make your pick, bargain a little and book the lehenga. They’re very busy during wedding season, so your wedding lehenga could take upto 90 days to make!
Note:
_ They do not stitch the blouse for you, but they do give you the fabric. I went ahead and got mine stitched from the popular, Eve’s tailor, at GK-1 M-block market in South Delhi.
Price Range:
_ 80K onwards
2. Asiana Couture
Sabyasachi, Anita Dongre and Anju Modi inspired designs are in endless stock here. Asiana is a relatively new store (as compared to OPJL) but it’s made a mark. The ambience is fancier, as compared to other stores here, and it’s quite comfortable.
They keep exact matching blouses as well as artificial jewellery ready for the bride to try on. That way, you can truly see what your final look will be. This is really helpful when you’re trying to figure out which of the 20 designs you will have “shortlisted” from all the gorgeous-ness you spotted here!
Note:
_ They also have an in-house brand, Payal Keyal, that creates unique, completely original creations. Her pastels in modern silhouettes is stunning, and surprising, to everyone who realises this comes from a Chandni Chowk store’s own designer. She will be opening her own separate store in Chandni Chowk soon.
Price Range:
_ Asiana is a little pricey and almost starts at 80K moving to almost 2 lakhs.
3. Dalmia Fashions
A huge store in the lanes of Chandni Chowk is Dalmia Fashions. It has Sabya-inspired lehengas and if you’re looking for variety, this is the one to visit.
The owner at Dalmia understands your needs and helps you find the right outfit for your big day.
Note:
_ A store that goes by the name “Lalit Dalmia” has been telling customers that they’re run by the people behind Dalmia Fashions. However, it is not true! Many brides have made this mistake and placed orders at this other store and regretted it – since their service quality is quite bad. Probably for this reason, Dalmia Fashions is changing their name (this week itself, according to their Instagram page).
Price Range:
_ 40K onwards
4. Shrangar
Shrangar has a smaller variety, but wow – this store is truly something else! Gorgeous ambience and a stunning collection, you will forget you’re inside Chandni Chowk. Please take an appointment before you visit and enjoy attention from the owner! He will help you with styling ideas for your final look.
They do keep matching blouses and artificial jewellery for you to try on.
Price Range:
_ 60K Onwards
5. Sunehree
Sunehree has one of the best bridal Lehenga collections in Chandni Chowk. From very heavy lehengas to simple ones, it has a wide variety you can choose from according to your taste. They are also well priced according to Chandni Chowk and the other famous shops nearby. Apart from just bridal wear, one can even do their trousseau and bridesmaid shopping from here.
Their saree collection is very affordable, funky and flattering! Very elegant with their georgette drapes, they give a very dainty look with dramatic embroidery and designs. Some of their sarees have contemporary cuts making them indeed very unique and very difficult to ignore even by those oblivious to fashion!
Price Range:
_ 50K – 1.5 lakhs
6. Kamal Bhai Saree Sangam
One of the budget-friendly stores, Kamal Bhai has a warm, friendly vibe that puts you at ease the second you walk in. Yes, it isn’t like the bigger, fancy ones but if you’re here to find yourself a lehenga within 20-40k, KBSS is the place for you!
They have blouses in standard colours that you can try on, and they don’t keep artifical jewellery for you to try own with the outfit. But, with how your budget wedding shopping dreams come true here, they’re not much to complain about!
Price Range:
_ 20K – 80K
7. Sudhir Bhai Saree Wale
Sudhir Bhai Saree Wale was responsible for the trend, also inspiring a few designers to incorporating croatia in their work. For restricted pockets and great designs and variety, this is the place for you. The shopkeepers are friendly and very cooperative, however, the shop is a little disorganised as compared to the other shops. Ranging from Gota Patti work to intricate zari work, they’ve definitely got you covered!
Price Range:
_ 10K – 60K
8. Ram Kishan Sarees
This is a beautiful store hidden in the lanes of Chandni Chowk. Their lehengas stand out from the crowd! Manish Malhotra and Sabyasachi inspired designs are easy to find here. You may not find many pieces when you go there at first, but once they know what you want, they’ll definitely provide you with the best outfit. All in all, it’s a well-priced store where you can also find some pretty anarkalis for other functions.
I hope this helps you with narrowing down your options. Tell me in the comments – what are your favourite spots to do lehenga shopping in Chandni Chowk?
